The journey begins at London Euston, where the Highland Sleeper departs for northern Scotland.
When booking, select Leuchars (for St Andrews) as your destination. Leuchars sits on the Aberdeen section of the Caledonian Sleeper route and is only a short taxi or bus journey from the centre of St Andrews.
After boarding, guests are shown to their accommodation for the night. The corridors are narrow, the cabins are compact and the atmosphere feels pleasingly removed from modern air travel. There are no security queues or baggage carousels. Your room moves with you.
The train travels through the night before crossing into Scotland and dividing at Edinburgh. The Aberdeen section then continues towards Fife, carrying sleeping passengers closer to the North Sea and the ancient streets of St Andrews.
Arrival at Leuchars is early. But that is part of the experience.
Step from the train as Scotland begins to wake, make the short final journey into town and you can be standing beside the Old Course before many visitors have finished breakfast.
Which room should you book?
There are several ways to travel aboard the Caledonian Sleeper, ranging from reclining seats to private en-suite rooms.

The Club En-suite has twin bunk beds, a private shower and toilet, breakfast and priority access to the Club Car. The Caledonian Double replaces the bunks with a double bed and is the most comfortable choice for couples.
The more affordable Classic Room provides twin bunks, a washbasin and a private space for the night, although its toilets and showers are shared.
Cabins are intentionally small. This is not a sprawling hotel suite on rails. But there is something wonderfully intimate about closing the door, dimming the lights and feeling the train begin its journey north.

Dinner as Britain passes by
Guests staying in Club and Caledonian Double rooms receive priority access to the Club Car, the train’s lounge and dining carriage.
It is the natural place to begin the journey. Order something to eat, choose a Scottish whisky and watch London’s outer edges pass the window. Afterwards, return to your cabin and allow the movement of the train to settle you into the night.
Breakfast can be served in the Club Car or delivered to your room. Depending on the season and the time of arrival, the first light may reveal fields, woodland and glimpses of the Fife landscape.
The scenery is not the only attraction. Part of the pleasure lies in knowing that while you have been sleeping, almost the entire journey has been completed.
Arriving in St Andrews
Leuchars is the railway gateway to St Andrews. Taxis ordinarily wait outside the station, and local buses connect the station with the town.
The transfer takes approximately 15 minutes. The road approaches St Andrews from the north, with the town’s spires and rooftops gradually appearing ahead.
Ask to be dropped near the Old Course and your first steps in St Andrews can take you directly towards the Royal and Ancient clubhouse, the first tee and the sweeping expanse of West Sands.
At this time of the morning, the town feels different. The streets are quiet, the light is soft and the famous links sit openly beside the sea. Walk across the public path beside the first and 18th fairways, continue towards the Swilcan Bridge and watch the earliest golfers begin their rounds.
From there, find breakfast in town before checking into your hotel and beginning the rest of your stay.
Why take the sleeper instead of flying?
Flying may be faster in the air, but the sleeper transforms travel time into part of the holiday.
You leave from central London rather than travelling to an airport. Your accommodation and transport are combined for the night. Luggage remains with you, and there is no need to surrender a morning or afternoon to the journey north.
More importantly, arriving by sleeper creates a sense of transition. London does not simply end and Scotland suddenly begin. One landscape gradually gives way to another while you sleep.

What to know before travelling
The Caledonian Sleeper normally operates between London and Scotland six nights a week, Sunday through Friday, with no regular Saturday-night service.
Rooms can sell out well in advance, particularly during summer, university events and major golfing weeks. Book early if you plan to visit during The Open, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship or the peak golf season.
Timings can change because of engineering work, so always check the confirmed schedule for your date before travelling.
